Newsletter for All Saints Sunday Club and Upper Room Group, Autumn/Winter 2007
Hello to Parents, Leaders and Helpers… Welcome to the 2nd of our newsletters bringing you up to date with Sunday Club and Upper Room news and thank you to everyone who gave us feedback on the last one. We wanted to use this newsletter to give you advance notice of forthcoming Christmas activities and update you on how the new arrangements are working.
Update on the recent changes to Upper Room and Sunday Club The new arrangements seem to be operating without too many problems. Timing can be tight so it is really helpful if the Sunday Club children can be brought or directed to the John Wood Room before the service begins.
We’ve had a few hiccups with Sunday Club not realizing it’s time to return to the service and merrily carrying on! If you are leading or helping, it is probably worth speaking to one of the Servers before the service, to ask them to tell you when it’s time to come back in.
It is also nice to see the children and their families sitting towards the front as well – hope this makes it easier for you to see what is going on.
Although numbers of the younger age group are fairly low at present, Upper Room numbers (aged 8 +) are healthy. Upper Room Group members continue to leave the service for their lively discussions .They return to the service at the Peace, along with the younger children. If you have a child aged 8+ and they have not yet joined the group, do feel free to let them go along for a taster session. Sunday Club continues to specifically cater for the youngest members of our congregation.
You may have noticed that several members of the Upper Room Group are also in the choir and they are now singing every week.
Roots Resources The resources available via Roots on the web and its companion magazine are proving very useful for those of us planning sessions. A copy of the magazine can be found in the John Wood Room cupboard.
Baggies Green bags or “baggies” with colouring materials are available for children when they are in Church. These can be found under the table (where the All Saints magazines are kept). Please feel free to use these but do let us know if the materials inside need replacing. If you have any spare colouring books or unwanted small toys that could go into the baggies, please get in touch.
Helpers and Leaders needed Sunday Club is rather short of helpers at present and we’d love to hear from anyone who might be interested in being added to the rota. The duties are not arduous – usually it involves helping with craft activities, making the juice etc. In practice you might find yourself down to help 1 or 2 Sundays per term. We’d also be very happy to hear from people who might take on a leadership duty. As with the helpers – leaders are normally scheduled in for 1 or 2 sessions per term and the Roots resources are available to assist in planning activities. If you are interested in helping or leading, please get in touch with one of us and we’ll let you know what’s involved. You don’t have to be a parent of a Sunday Club or Upper Room child by the way – anyone who feels they can help will be welcome. Christmas activities Looking forward to Christmas here are several events coming up:
The Holy Family in Advent – a journey around the Parish. Firstly, the Holy Family will once again be making its journey around the Parish during Advent. For those not familiar with this lovely tradition, then here’s a quick description of what happens.
Wooden figures of the Family are blessed in church on Advent Sunday (2nd December this year) and then they travel around the Parish in the weeks leading up to Christmas, spending a few nights in different households. A notebook accompanies them and as the Family travels around, this fills up with pictures, prayers, poems etc representing people’s thoughts on Christmas and the Holy Family. As the Family is passed from household to household, it gives a chance for people to spend some time with other Parish members – maybe have a cup of tea when the Family is collected or passed on. If you would like to host the Holy Family for a few days, then please get in touch with Jill Bradley (238934) or Peter Warwick (577377) by 25 November.
Christmas Party The Sunday Club and Upper Room Christmas Party will take place on Saturday December 22, 4.00pm – 6.00pm in the Scout Hut, Pittville, Central Cross Drive. Games, dancing, quizzes and fun! Please bring a plate of food to share. Christmas Nativity Service, 4.00pm, 24th December The All Saints Christmas Eve service at 4.00 pm this year, will be slightly different from years gone by. The service will be by candlelight and will feature the Nativity Story, with lots of participation from children. We hope you will all be able to make it. Please tell your neighbours and friends about it as well. ..And finally….. Every best wish with your preparations as we head towards Christmas. Hope you find this newsletter useful and as ever thank you for all your support. Please let us know if you have any feedback or ideas for Sunday Club or the newsletter. Jean, Jill, Karen and Liz |
